Now we’re looking at watchmaker(s) in search for new James Bond

Three weeks ago, Omega announced that Aaron Taylor-Johnson [1] had become a part of its “family of global ambassadors” [2]. With that, the Internet erupted with speculation that 007-cum-Amazon had been cast [3-7].

Regardless of what was behind it, the move packed a healthy dose of viral wallop. As I think about it, this morning might be the first where Google hasn’t alerted me to some new content on the matter, just released by global news outlet, special interest blogger, or soulless AI.

Here and there I’ve seen the case for Mr Taylor-Johnson as inevitable next James Bond undergirded by references to “both Brosnan and Daniel Craig” having been named “Omega ambassadors before they headed to MI6” [8-9].

But I don’t recall any “Pierce Brosnan’s Choice” advertising released prior GoldenEye (1995) — and nothing like that could have been on the watchmaker website [10]. As for Daniel Craig, I recall writing about his having created quite a stir with wristwatch choices that underscored that he had been initially passed over as *personal* ambassador; that status did not change until well-after *Casino Royale* (2006) had premiered [11].

Before moving beyond what may or may not have been confirmed of late *by* Omega [12-13], I’ll further note the absence of headlines on the matter of whether or not Omega itself has officially contracted to return as Amazon-Bond watchmaker for “Bond 26.”

Tenured watchmaker Seiko was not guaranteed a return after A View to a Kill (1985); last-call for Rolex came two years after, in Licence to Kill.

In 1999, it was still considered news that Pierce Brosnan would wear an Omega in The World Is Not Enough, despite his having worn quartz, then mechanical Seamasters in the two films immediately prior [14]. So, too, for Casino Royale [15]. Product placement contracts for motion pictures are anything but rote [16-18]; all the more so as 2025 unfolds, where nothing in the world of James Bond should be assumed a given.

Tails aren’t gonna wag the dog on Bond 26. No actor is bigger than the brand. And even when credited with the net sales reported by its parent company Swatch Group of CHF 6.735 billion (US $8.142 billion) for 2024 [19], I doubt that Omega could leverage that to move Amazon MGM Studios — at US $638.0 billion [20] — into calling it back (before it was ready, if at all) based on a “leak” [21].

As I see it, the only way that Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Omega manifested an implied *accidental confirmation* of lead-actor casting [22] is if both were aware up-front that neither will be a part of Bond 26, per the notion of having nothing to lose.

That’s highly doubtful.

Far more plausible to my way of thinking is that this move was strategic, collaborative, and disciplined.

First off, it asserts control of the narrative and draws discussion back to the center. There’s been talk of Pierce Brosnan returning as an older James Bond. The “007 First Light” video game announcement sparked commentary about casting Patrick Gibson [23] as a younger James Bond [24].

Somewhere in between, that positions Mr Taylor-Johnson *just right*.

From such a position, I’d mine the rich depths of public feedback on this particular inferred casting.

How far does association of Aaron Taylor-Johnson with 007 move the needle [25-27]? in the right direction [28]? Does he play nice with media, selling both character and each movie as it comes [29]? Omega was a solid choice [30-34], then, for getting these questions before the right audiences, reaching a meaningful sample size for analysis.

And none of this need obligate Amazon MGM Studies in any way for Bond 26. I rather think that the mere high-visibility appearance in headlines, now (concurrent with the latest Mission: Impossible [35] release), is already paying dividends beyond anything that could be had elsewhere to both actor and watchmaker.

Of course, it’s also possible that all of this is actually no more than a matter of Aaron Taylor-Johnson simply having “killer taste in watches” [36].
